Shopify Email is now called Shopify Messaging. Shopify gave it the new name when it added SMS marketing in December 2025 (opens in new tab), and the app now sends email, SMS and WhatsApp marketing campaigns (opens in new tab) from your Shopify admin. So the Shopify Email vs Klaviyo decision is the same decision under a new name: stay on the tool built into Shopify, or pay for Klaviyo.
Shopify Messaging is a sound choice when you’re sending campaigns to a modest list and running a few standard automations, because at that size it costs close to nothing and lives in the admin you already use. Klaviyo earns its price once segmentation, flows that branch, SMS inside those same flows, and revenue reporting start driving decisions about where your marketing money goes. BLKDG is a Klaviyo Partner and a Shopify Partner, so we work on both sides of this comparison.
Shopify Email Is Now Shopify Messaging
The rename kept everything Shopify Email already did. The old address, shopify.com/email (opens in new tab), still loads the product page under the Shopify Messaging name, and the App Store listing still sits at the shopify-email address. If you used Shopify Email before, your campaigns, templates and automations are the ones you’ll find in Shopify Messaging.
Shopify Messaging comes with the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans (opens in new tab). Your store needs an active, paid Shopify plan (opens in new tab), the Online Store sales channel and a payment provider. On a free trial or the Pause and Build plan, you can build campaigns and send tests to yourself, but you can’t send to subscribers.
Automations moved once already. On March 24, 2026, automations that send Shopify Messaging emails moved into the Shopify Messaging app (opens in new tab), and automations built around other apps’ marketing activities moved to Shopify Flow. Merchants didn’t have to do anything for those automations to keep working.
Klaviyo is a separate app you install from the Shopify App Store. Its charges are billed every 30 days and can come from Klaviyo separately (opens in new tab) from your Shopify invoice. Shopify Messaging charges land on your Shopify bill, which is one fewer vendor to reconcile each month.
What Shopify Email And Klaviyo Cost On A Small List
Every store on the eligible plans gets 10,000 free emails at the start of each month (opens in new tab). After that, Shopify charges $1 per 1,000 emails up to 300,000, then $0.65 per 1,000, and $0.55 per 1,000 after 750,000. Each email counts once per address it goes to, unused emails don’t carry over to the next month, and you aren’t billed for extra emails until the charge reaches $0.005.
Automations draw from the same 10,000 emails, with one exception. Abandoned checkout automations are always free and don’t count toward the monthly limit. That exception covers abandoned checkout only: abandoned cart and browse abandonment emails count like any other send.
Here’s how the Shopify side works out at three list sizes, each sending four campaigns a month. A 2,500-subscriber list sends exactly 10,000 emails, so it pays nothing. A 5,000-subscriber list sends 20,000 emails, 10,000 over the allowance, which comes to $10 at Shopify’s $1 per 1,000. A 20,000-subscriber list sends 80,000 emails and pays $70, before any automation emails other than abandoned checkout.
Klaviyo’s free plan covers up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month (opens in new tab), plus $5 a month of mobile messages and email support for the first 60 days. That’s two emails per profile per month if you’re at the 250-profile cap. Go over 250 profiles and you can’t send email until you’re back under the cap or upgrade. Go over 500 sends and sending stops until the next billing cycle or until you upgrade.
Klaviyo’s paid email plan starts at $20 a month for 251 to 500 contacts (opens in new tab). Prices for larger lists come from the calculator on Klaviyo’s pricing page (opens in new tab), so get the number for your own profile count before you compare. A store with 500 contacts sending four Shopify Messaging campaigns a month sends 2,000 emails, well inside the free allowance, while the same store would pay Klaviyo $20 a month for email.
Klaviyo bills on profiles it can email, whatever their consent status, and unsubscribed and suppressed profiles don’t count (opens in new tab). On a paid plan, going over your profile limit moves you up a tier at the next billing cycle. Suppressing profiles you’ll never email again keeps them off the bill.
| Cost item | Shopify Messaging | Klaviyo |
|---|---|---|
| What sets the price | Emails sent each month | Profiles you can email |
| Free allowance | 10,000 emails a month on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus | Free plan: 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month |
| First paid step | $1 per 1,000 emails over the allowance | $20 a month for 251 to 500 contacts |
| Abandoned checkout emails | Always free | Count as normal sends |
| Where it’s billed | Your Shopify bill | Every 30 days, possibly separate from your Shopify invoice |
Automations: Shopify Messaging Vs Klaviyo Flows
Shopify Messaging has 11 automation templates (opens in new tab) in four groups. Three recover site visitors: browse abandonment, abandoned cart and abandoned checkout. Two welcome new subscribers with a discount, as a single email or a series, and four follow a purchase: a thank-you, an upsell after the first order, a win-back, and a nudge toward your nearby retail locations. The last two celebrate a customer’s birthday and welcome VIP customers.
The discount welcome series has one condition: if the subscriber doesn’t buy, a reminder goes out. Win-back, birthday and VIP automations start when a customer joins a segment, and the default VIP segment is anyone who places a third order and spends $1,000 or more, or carries a VIP tag. Automations send only to email subscribers by default, though you can switch abandoned checkout to all customers.
SMS is built into the three abandonment templates, and you can create your own SMS automations (opens in new tab) too. One setup mistake is easy to make: with two welcome automations active (opens in new tab), every new subscriber gets twice the emails.
For anything custom, or anything that involves another app, Shopify sends you to Shopify Flow (opens in new tab). Flow is a free app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans (opens in new tab), and you build workflows in it from triggers, conditions and actions. Some actions, such as Send HTTP Request, are limited to higher plans, and Shopify Messaging needs Flow installed for full functionality. So with Shopify, a branching sequence means building it in Flow, a second tool with its own logic.
Klaviyo puts the branching inside the flow. A Klaviyo flow (opens in new tab) can start when someone views a product, starts checkout, places an order, fills out a form, sees a price drop, reaches a key date, is predicted to order again, or goes quiet for a while. A split sends people down different paths based on their profile data, location, list membership or predictive analytics, or on details of the action that started the flow, such as cart value, product category or acquisition source.
The same flow can mix email, SMS and push, and you can A/B test send times, channels, message content and discount offers inside it. Klaviyo offers more than 60 prebuilt flow templates to start from. Our ranking of Klaviyo flows by what each one returns per recipient covers which to build first.
If a cart reminder should offer a discount only above a certain cart value, or a welcome series should treat a past buyer differently from a new subscriber, that’s one split in a Klaviyo flow. In Shopify Messaging, custom logic like that goes into a Shopify Flow workflow.
Segments In Shopify Email Vs Klaviyo
A Shopify segment (opens in new tab) is a dynamic, rule-based customer list, and customers move in and out of it automatically. The filters (opens in new tab) cover amount spent, number of orders, products purchased, first and last order date, abandoned checkout date, email opens, clicks and bounces, SMS subscription status, products and collections viewed, distance from a location, RFM group and predicted spend tier.
That’s enough for most campaign targeting. You can send a new product to everyone who bought from that collection, hold back customers who didn’t open your last campaign, or pick out your top spenders by RFM group, which sorts customers by how recently, how often and how much they buy.
Klaviyo says its segments update in real time (opens in new tab) and reach as far back as your data goes. They can draw on browsing behavior, purchase history, channel preferences, custom properties, location, loyalty points, support tickets and subscription status. Klaviyo also builds segments from predictive analytics, such as churn risk, customer lifetime value and expected next order date, and you can describe a segment in plain language and let Klaviyo build the conditions.
The gap is in prediction and outside data. Shopify can tell you what a customer has done and where they fall in a spend tier. Klaviyo can also estimate who’s about to stop buying and when someone’s next order is due, and it can pull in data from your loyalty or support tools. Our guide to Klaviyo segmentation pairs each segment with the flow it feeds.
Text Messages: What Each Tool Charges And Where Texts Can Go
Shopify Messaging charges per message, per recipient, by country (opens in new tab): $0.012 in the United States, $0.025 in Canada and $0.06 in the United Kingdom. A text that runs past the single-message length is charged as more than one message, and confirmation texts, double opt-in texts and keyword replies like HELP are charged too. Each approved toll-free number in the US and Canada costs $2.15 a month, and you get up to 25 free test messages a week.
At Shopify’s US rate, a text to 1,000 subscribers costs $12. If it runs long enough to split into two messages, it costs $24. SMS charges go on your Shopify bill alongside email.
Shopify Messaging only handles SMS marketing (opens in new tab). Order and shipping texts are set up separately. The countries you can text change, too: Shopify has paused SMS marketing to Spanish numbers, and to Austrian numbers from October 1, 2026, so check the current list against where your customers live.
Klaviyo’s free plan includes $5 of mobile messages a month (opens in new tab), depending on region and carrier. Klaviyo moved mobile messaging from credits to per-message dollar rates (opens in new tab) starting July 13, 2026, and your account’s rates show in the app under Settings, Billing, Overview, and again when you review a send before scheduling it. You commit to an amount of spend that burns down as you send (opens in new tab), with rates that vary by message type and country.
Klaviyo’s monthly mobile spend resets each month, unused dollars don’t carry over, and carrier fees are included (opens in new tab). A single SMS holds 160 characters, or 70 if it includes an emoji or special character. Pull your Klaviyo rate from your own account before you compare it to Shopify’s published table.
The bigger SMS difference is where texts can go. In Klaviyo, a text is a step inside any flow, next to emails and behind the same splits. In Shopify Messaging, SMS is built into the three abandonment templates and the SMS automations you create yourself. If you’re planning texts across the whole customer lifecycle, our email and SMS marketing work covers welcome, cart, browse, post-purchase and win-back programs, and our guide to SMS marketing for ecommerce covers consent, opt-in and carrier registration before you send a single text.
Why Shopify Email And Klaviyo Report Different Revenue
Shopify Messaging reports opens, clicks, sessions, orders, sales and average order value for each campaign, and it credits orders using a last non-direct click model (opens in new tab). An order counts for an email when the email was the last marketing click before the purchase. Open rates are estimates, because email previews and security tools can load the tracking pixel without a person reading anything.
For new accounts, Klaviyo defaults to a last touch model with a 5-day window for email opens (opens in new tab), as well as 5 days for email clicks and SMS clicks, 12 hours for SMS deliveries, and 24 hours for push opens. You can change all of those windows in your attribution settings.
Klaviyo’s new-account default can credit an order to an email the customer only opened in the five days before buying, while Shopify needs a click. If you move from Shopify Messaging to Klaviyo, your email-attributed revenue can rise without a single extra sale.
Judge a switch on total store revenue and orders, not on the email dashboard. If you want Klaviyo’s numbers to sit closer to Shopify’s, shorten the email-open window in Klaviyo’s attribution settings before you start comparing. Check your account’s attribution settings to see which windows it uses.
When Shopify Messaging Is Enough
Shopify Messaging fits a store whose email program is mostly campaigns plus the standard automations. If your monthly sends stay near the 10,000 free emails, you’re paying little or nothing, and abandoned checkout emails never add to the bill. You set it up in the same admin as your products and orders, and the templates pull your logo, products, prices and store colors (opens in new tab) automatically.
It’s the right call when all of these are true:
- You send a handful of campaigns a month to a list that stays near the free allowance
- The 11 templates, edited for your brand, cover the automations you need
- Your texts are mostly abandonment reminders and a few SMS automations you set up yourself
- Shopify's segment filters, including RFM group and predicted spend tier, are enough to target your sends
- You'd rather keep marketing charges on your Shopify bill
When Klaviyo Is Worth More Than Shopify Email
Klaviyo is worth the money once your email program needs branching logic inside the flow itself: you want a flow to branch on cart value or purchase history, texts and emails in the same flow behind the same splits, segments built on churn risk or expected next order date, or data from loyalty and support tools in your targeting.
Price is the other half. Get Klaviyo’s number for your profile count from its calculator, set it against the Shopify Messaging cost you’ve worked out from your send volume, and decide whether the flows and segments above are worth the difference for your store. If you’re past Shopify Messaging but unsure Klaviyo is the right next step, our comparison of Klaviyo vs Omnisend covers the other common choice for Shopify stores.
Switching From Shopify Email To Klaviyo
The Klaviyo Shopify integration (opens in new tab) brings your customer profiles and order data into Klaviyo, and your product catalog fills in automatically, and you can choose to sync your Shopify Markets catalogs too. Onsite tracking is a separate step. It adds events like Viewed Product, Added to Cart and Submitted Search, and it turns on Klaviyo sign-up forms.
You can also sync email and SMS subscription status from Klaviyo back to Shopify, so the two systems agree on who’s opted in. Before you turn on a Klaviyo welcome or cart flow, turn off the matching Shopify Messaging automation, or new subscribers get both.
Our guide to moving lists into Klaviyo is written for stores leaving Mailchimp, and its order of steps carries over: export first, suppress before you import, keep welcome series off during the import, and warm up the new sending setup before you cut over.
Moving Up From Shopify Messaging
If your store has outgrown Shopify Messaging, our Klaviyo email marketing agency work starts with a free Growth Audit of your setup. From there we connect and verify Shopify, sync consent, design flows around the right triggers, and document your attribution windows so you know why Klaviyo’s revenue doesn’t match your other reports. If you’re still deciding between Shopify Email vs Klaviyo, the Growth Audit is a good place to get a straight answer for your store.
