Magento to Shopify Migration

Your Magento store is costing you
more than you think.

A Magento to Shopify migration done right means every product and customer record arrives intact, your rankings are protected through the move, and your team finally runs the store without a $200-per-hour developer on retainer. BLKDG works across Magento Open Source, Magento 2, and Adobe Commerce — mapping every URL to a 301 redirect before launch so your hard-won SEO equity moves with you.

100% redirect coverage — every .html URL and category path mapped before launch, zero 404s
Full data integrity — products, customers, order history, and configurable variants
SEO-first execution — organic traffic protected from day one

A Magento to Shopify migration is one of the highest-stakes replatforms in ecommerce — and one of the most technically unforgiving. URL structures clash, EAV product data doesn’t map cleanly, and customer password hashes are incompatible by design. BLKDG handles the full scope: platform migration strategy, data transformation, redirect architecture, and SEO migration — so your rankings survive the transition and your team inherits a store they can run.

The Real Cost of Staying on Magento

Staying on Magento is a choice you make every day you don't leave. The cost compounds quietly — until it doesn't.

If you're on Magento Open Source, you're not running a "free" platform. You're running one that bills you in developer hours. Every security patch — and Adobe now releases them on an accelerating cadence — requires a certified Magento developer to apply, validate, and test against your extensions. Your 15 to 30 custom modules each have their own compatibility surface. One bad patch cycle and you're looking at a broken checkout on a Sunday night with no one to call. If you're on Adobe Commerce, add a license fee that scales with your GMV on top of that same maintenance burden.

If you're still on Magento 1, you are operating an unpatched storefront. Adobe's official support ended in June 2020. New vulnerabilities have been discovered every year since, with no official fix available. Magecart skimmer attacks specifically target end-of-life Magento 1 installations. PCI DSS 4.0 makes compliance nearly impossible to demonstrate on an unpatched platform. The question isn't whether something goes wrong. It's whether it goes wrong before or after you migrate.

And then there's the migration itself. Most Magento merchants have heard a horror story: the agency that dropped rankings because they didn't handle the .html URL suffix. The store that launched without order history. The customer base that got forced to reset every password with zero warning. The configurable product catalog that arrived on Shopify as a pile of disconnected variants. These aren't edge cases — they are what happens when an agency treats a Magento migration like any other platform switch. Magento is not any other platform.

Why most Magento → Shopify migrations fail

The gap between Magento and Shopify is wider than any other replatform in ecommerce. Magento stores URLs with .html suffixes and nested category paths that Shopify replaces with a flat /products/ structure. Every one of those URLs lives in Google's index — without an explicit, one-to-one redirect mapped before launch, every indexed page becomes a 404. At the same time, Magento's EAV database stores product attributes in a way that has no direct equivalent in Shopify, and configurable products with more than three attribute axes exceed Shopify's three-option limit. Customer passwords are hashed with a Magento-specific algorithm Shopify can't read. Each of these is a known, solvable problem. It just has to be solved before launch, not after the rankings drop.

What staying on Magento is costing you

The license fee is visible. Everything else isn't. A mid-market Magento store carries hosting, developer maintenance, extension renewals, and security upkeep before a single feature gets built — and Adobe Commerce stacks a GMV-based license on top of that. Magento's Luma theme and the extension-heavy stack most stores accumulate over years of customization ship more JavaScript and CSS than any page needs, driving Core Web Vitals scores down and conversion rates with them. Every month on a slow, expensive, patch-burdened platform is a month your competitors on Shopify are running lighter, faster, and cheaper.

See exactly what your migration will take — before you commit.

We audit your Magento store's URL structure, product catalog, customer data, and integration dependencies. You get a clear scope, a real timeline, and a redirect strategy before any work starts. No assumptions. No surprises at launch.

Why BLKDG for Magento migrations

Magento Migrations, Handled by SEO Engineers and Shopify Developers

BLKDG is a full-service SEO and Shopify development studio that has executed Magento to Shopify migrations across DTC brands, food and beverage companies, and B2B-adjacent catalogs. We understand the specific ways Magento data resists a clean export: the EAV attribute tables, the layered navigation dependencies, the multi-store configurations that map imperfectly to Shopify Markets. Before we move a single record, we map every URL, every attribute, and every integration dependency.

The work doesn’t stop at data transfer. We rebuild the storefront through custom Shopify theme development, wire in post-migration email automation in Klaviyo to re-engage your customer base, and validate performance through Core Web Vitals optimization before the store goes live. One team, one scope, one point of accountability.

How our Magento migration works

Audit. Migrate. Verify.

01

We Audit Your Magento Store Before Anything Moves

We crawl your entire store and export a complete URL inventory — product pages, category pages, CMS pages, and every legacy URL rewrite Magento has accumulated. We map your EAV product attribute schema to Shopify’s options and metafields, flag any configurable products with more than three option axes, and document every third-party integration: ERPs, PIMs, review platforms, loyalty programs, and payment gateways. You see the full migration scope and the risks before the project starts, paired with a technical SEO audit of what carries the most equity.

02

We Transform and Migrate Everything in Parallel

We transform and transfer your product catalog — including configurable products, their child variants, and all associated metafield data — to Shopify’s structure without dropping attributes or breaking relationships. Customer records and full order history come with them. Because Shopify cannot read Magento’s password hash algorithm, we implement a Multipass-based re-authentication flow: customers land on a branded reset prompt the first time they log in, not a generic error. Your new Shopify store is built in parallel — on a custom theme, with all integrations wired — and tested to parity before a single DNS record changes.

03

We Verify Before Launch and Monitor After

Every URL from your Magento store gets a one-to-one 301 redirect: /category/subcategory/product.html maps to /products/product-handle. We eliminate redirect chains, confirm crawl depth, and submit a fresh sitemap to Google Search Console before launch. Post-launch, we monitor organic positions, crawl errors, and Core Web Vitals against pre-migration baselines and resolve any anomaly as it appears. Day one on Shopify should feel like day 1,000.

What our Magento migration covers

Every Layer of Your Store, Migrated and Verified

SEO & URL Mapping

Every Indexed URL Accounted For

Magento's URL structure is the single biggest SEO risk in a migration. We build a complete redirect map before launch — no exceptions, no approximations — backed by our SEO migration methodology.

Customer Data & Accounts

Your Customers Arrive Intact

Customer records, order history, and account data transfer cleanly. Password hashing incompatibility is handled proactively — not discovered at 2am on launch day.

Product Catalog & Content

Complex Catalogs, Moved Cleanly

Magento's EAV attribute structure and configurable product model don't export cleanly to Shopify by default. We do the transformation work — not an automated tool that flattens your catalog.

Your Tech Stack, Re-Wired on Shopify

The integrations that run your business don't automatically translate. We scope, rebuild, and test every connection before launch.

What happens when a Magento migration goes wrong

The Cost of a Botched Migration

Rankings gone in weeks, not months.

If your Magento .html URLs go dark without 301 redirects in place, Google interprets every indexed page as disappeared content. Domain authority built over years of SEO investment dissolves in a crawl cycle. Recovering organic traffic after a botched migration is a multi-quarter project. You don't get a grace period.

Customers who can't log in, can't buy.

Magento hashes customer passwords using an algorithm Shopify cannot read. Without a proactive re-authentication strategy, your entire customer base hits a login error on day one — no order history, no account access, no reorder. The customers most likely to abandon are your highest-LTV accounts, the ones who already trusted you.

Catalog chaos that takes months to untangle.

Magento's EAV database structure has no direct parallel in Shopify. Automated migration tools make assumptions — and those assumptions break product relationships, drop variant data, and flatten configurable products into disconnected SKUs. Cleaning up a botched catalog post-launch is slower and more expensive than doing the transformation correctly the first time.

Integrations that go dark at the worst time.

Your ERP, OMS, loyalty program, review platform, and email tool are wired into Magento in Magento-specific ways. None of them reconnect on Shopify automatically. A migration that doesn't audit and rebuild integrations before launch means orders not syncing, inventory diverging, and marketing flows firing against stale data — all discovered after customers have already felt the failure.

FAQ

Before you ask.

It matters, but none of them are disqualifying. Magento 1 migrations carry the most urgency — the platform has been unpatched since June 2020 and PCI DSS 4.0 compliance is effectively impossible to demonstrate on it. The data export process differs between M1 and M2, and M1 stores often have more accumulated URL rewrite history to unpack. Adobe Commerce typically involves more complex integrations and multi-store configurations. We've migrated all three. The audit phase determines the precise scope.

This is one of the most common Magento-specific constraints. Shopify allows a maximum of three options per product (for example: size, color, material). If your Magento configurable products use four or more attribute axes, we work with you during the audit to determine the right mapping strategy — consolidating attributes, using metafields for non-variant data, or structuring products differently. No automated tool handles this correctly; it requires mapping decisions made before the migration runs.

Not if the redirects are built before launch. Magento's default URL structure appends .html to product and category pages, while Shopify uses /products/ and /collections/. Every one of those URLs exists in Google's index. We build a complete, one-to-one 301 redirect map from your crawled Magento URL inventory before a single DNS record changes, eliminate redirect chains, verify crawl depth post-launch, and monitor Search Console. This is the part of a Magento migration most agencies underestimate.

No — and any agency that tells you otherwise is mistaken. Magento uses a proprietary hashing algorithm that Shopify cannot read, which is a good thing from a security standpoint. Instead, we implement a Multipass-based re-authentication flow. When a migrated customer logs in for the first time on Shopify, they receive a branded prompt to set a new password, framed as a security upgrade, not an error. Order history and account data are already waiting for them. Paired with a post-launch Klaviyo activation flow, re-authentication rates are high and friction is minimal.

For a standard DTC store — under 5,000 products, one storefront, typical integrations — plan for roughly 8 to 12 weeks from kickoff to launch. Stores with large catalogs, ERP integrations, or multi-store configurations run longer. The audit phase pins down the timeline with specificity. The factors that extend timelines most are not the data migration itself — it's data cleanup (Magento stores accumulate years of inconsistent product data) and integration rebuilds. We scope both explicitly before the project starts.

Cost scales with catalog complexity, integration depth, and whether you need a custom theme built alongside the migration. The free audit gives you a scoped estimate before you commit to anything. Worth remembering: a Magento Open Source store spending heavily on maintenance, hosting, and developer retainers is often net-neutral or better on Shopify within the first 12 to 18 months — even accounting for migration cost.
