The Overview

An authentic storytelling hub.

Toyota Trucks is one of the most recognized names in adventure vehicles, and Destination Detour was its bet that the audience who buys a Tacoma or 4Runner wants stories, not spec sheets. Partnering with GearJunkie’s national audience of outdoor enthusiasts, the campaign followed three teams of athletes on a 36-hour road trip challenge across California, pairing branded video episodes with trail guides and gear content. Toyota needed a digital home for all of it: a destination that could hold the series, the truck lineup, and the editorial content in one place, and convert campaign attention into real interest in the vehicles.

The Overview
The Challenge

Multi-media, dynamic bio-metrics data.

Toyota and GearJunkie had episodic video, editorial features, interactive trail content, and a full truck lineup to present, all on a compressed campaign timeline with a hard launch date tied to the series release. The microsite had to feel native to GearJunkie’s editorial world while carrying Toyota’s brand standards, load fast under sponsored traffic spikes, and route visitors cleanly from story to showroom. Off-the-shelf landing page tools weren’t going to hold that much content or that many stakeholders.

The Challenge
The Approach

A flexible, component-based Wordpress theme.

BLKDG designed and built the Destination Detour microsite as a custom WordPress build, structured as a subdomain within GearJunkie’s ecosystem so the campaign inherited editorial credibility without inheriting template constraints. We developed custom content modules for the episode hub, team profiles, truck spec sections, and the Detour-Worthy Trail Collection, so both brand and publisher teams could publish without touching code. Performance work mattered as much as design; the site needed to handle paid and editorial traffic surges without letting video-heavy pages drag. As a web development agency that builds for campaigns, not just launches, we architected it to flex as new episodes and articles rolled out through the season.

The Approach
The Outcome

National reach, record-setting engagement.

Destination Detour launched on schedule alongside the video series and ran as the campaign’s central hub through all three episodes. The site gave Toyota a branded environment that felt like adventure media rather than an ad, carried traffic from GearJunkie’s 60M-reach network, and connected storytelling directly to the truck lineup with build-your-own pathways for each model. And when the campaign evolved, adding new trail content and a finale push, the architecture absorbed it without a rebuild. That’s the standard for campaign infrastructure: built once, flexed all season.
