What does ADA mean?
ADA references the American with Disabilities Act of 1990. The act “provides comprehensive civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities in the areas of employment, state and local government services, public accommodations, transportation, and telecommunications” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services).
Who does the ADA apply to?
Any business operating for 20 or more weeks yearly, with at least 15 full-time employees.
How can the ADA affect your website?
Your website should be easily accessible to all users – including those who are blind, colorblind, deaf, those who have low vision, those who are hearing impaired, those use assisting voice or screen readers, those with limited mobility, and any learning or speech disabilities.
This includes providing alt tags for images and videos, having text transcripts and closed captioning and subtitles for video and audio, color contrast, having the site language in the header code, and organizing the site consistently.
What happens if your website isn’t compliant under the ADA?
Your business would be liable for lawsuits up to $50,000, depending on the state. You could also miss out on potential customers and lose SEO ranking, and be subject to bad public relations as a result.
