The Questions Worth Asking Before You Write the Check

How do you tie your work to revenue, not just deliverables?

Any agency can invoice for a website or a campaign. The ones worth hiring can show you how that work moved traffic, conversion rate, or attributed revenue. If they can't answer this clearly, they're not measuring the thing that matters.

Who will actually be doing the work day to day?

Agencies pitch with senior talent and staff with juniors. Ask who owns your account week to week and what their actual role is. The answer tells you whether you're buying a strategy or a production queue.

How do you handle SEO and paid media working together?

Siloed channels produce siloed results. If your agency runs search ads without informing organic strategy — or builds a site without touching technical SEO — you're paying for coordination they're not providing.

Can you show me results from a business like mine?

Case studies with vague outcomes are a tell. Ask for specifics: what the baseline was, what changed, and how long it took. Proof that travels across verticals is worth more than a polished portfolio with no numbers attached.

What does your reporting actually show, and how often?

Vanity metrics — impressions, reach, sessions without context — protect the agency, not you. Ask to see a real report from a current client. If it doesn't connect activity to outcomes, the reporting exists to justify the retainer.

What happens if the work isn't performing after 90 days?

Every agency describes a process. Very few describe what accountability looks like when that process isn't working. How they answer this tells you whether they're a true partner or a vendor hiding behind scope.

How do you adapt when the market shifts or your data changes?

Campaigns and sites that made sense six months ago can underperform today. Ask how often they revisit strategy, not just execute it. Agencies that adapt to data outperform ones that follow a plan off a cliff.
